DJ Coco Fresh // @cocofresh // website
Emerging from the West coast, DJ Coco Fresh is no stranger to music. Being influenced by the soulful raw sounds of her mother’s Motown/oldies collection, Coco Fresh’s father; a self taught guitarist and drummer, taught her the importance of listening to and understanding music with her ears. Coco Fresh’s creativity and curiosity for deejaying transpired in 1999 after listening to DJ’s Flipout and Jay-Swing on ‘The World Wide Ride’. At the age of 13, with no access to two turntables or a mixer, Coco Fresh made substitutions. Her two records were two CD’s placed flat on her dresser, while two pencils acted as her volume control and the fader; an eraser. Her creative set up allowed her to imitate the skills of a deejay, until she received her first pair of turntables and mixer.
Every DJ needs a stage name. With Coco Fresh it happened in high school. She grew up with the nickname ‘Coco’ and as a teenager she always rocked ‘fresh’ sneakers. Her best friend combined the two and ‘DJ Coco Fresh’ was born. Coco Fresh brings high energy while seamlessly creating mixes where she is able to spin all genres. She’ll hit you with a one the spot remix of Etta James, go into an electro set while blending some classic rock and if the feeling is right a set of soca and reggae music then possibly ending it with house music. When DJ Coco Fresh is spinning you can expect the unexpected.
Through out high school, Coco Fresh took her craft more seriously and began deejaying assemblies’, dances and private parties. Through out the party circuit, DJ Kemo, Flipout and Jay Swing took notice of Coco Fresh and soon after gave her pointers on how to excel with deejaying. DJ Coco Fresh’s guidance and influence comes from some of Canada’s respected DJ’s; Starting From Scratch, Baby Yu, Wristpect, Atrak, 4Korners, and Hunt. Her ultimate goal is to bring great music to people around the world.
