Yes! Another article about Scott Pilgrim vs. The World! But not about the game! This time it's about the movie. If you're like me, you've probably become a little sick of the constant media blitz on the film, what with all the advertising, TV spots, premieres, etc. etc. and when it comes down to it, as a cultural event my attachment to the property is such that Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (the movie) is the biggest thing to happen to me since Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. But was I crushed when I walked out of the theatre?
Actually, to be honest, I wasn't crushed when I walked out of The Phantom Menace. Like everyone else at the time I was all "it was pretty... good? I'm sure I'll 'get it' when I see it again" only for the crushing reality of how terrible it was to sink in a month or so later.
However, with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World--which comes out tomorrow, and probably has some midnight screenings tonight in Canada (wait, there are, check here ) I'm not really sure how to describe my feelings. To cut a long story short, I read the first book of Scott Pilgrim before moving to Toronto, and it colours my feelings of the city completely. A perfect book in the perfect time (I was roughly ages with the cast) I was feeling all the same things and experiencing all the same stuff as a twenty-something, and it represents a time and a strength of emotion I may never have again. It was--is, perhaps--a totem.
And then there's Edgar Wright, the director, who pre-Pilgrim defined my life in the UK with his television series Spaced!
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is, sort of, the convergence of all the things that have defined me as a person--and that's not even including the copious video game and indie music references.
So here's my opinion of the film, having been lucky enough to catch it at a preview screening. You should go and see it, whether you're a fan of the books or not, or whether you have played the video game. This weekend the selection of new releases includes Eat Pray Love (pathetic wish fulfilment for girls) and the Expendables (pathetic wish fulfilment for boys) and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (awesome wish fulfilment for everyone) so I think it's pretty obvious.
If you're looking for a more rational, deeper review of the film than that, I'm afraid I can't really oblige. I mean, I could discuss how good the performances are, if Michael Cera lives up to the role, the changes from the book, how the pacing is... but I just can't. I've only seen it once, and as I said, it's my Phantom Menace (well, my second Phantom Menace) so I was merely so blown away by the whole thing that I have no ability to critique it. So you should just go and see it, because I sure as hell had a good time and at the very best I have an inkling you will too.
