So many Canadians use Facebook, Flickr and SkyDrive to upload photos and videos on a daily basis, but there are limitations and flaws in the process. Photos aren’t in their highest resolution, and video is really limited to the short clips viewers can snack on. I’ve recently discovered a much better alternative to sharing photos and videos that offers unlimited storage.
Mejuba is a site that functions with few boundaries, which is a big reason why I like it. So many of the media sharing sites out there, including social networking behemoths like Facebook, limit uploads to a set file size. Not to mention the paid sites that require a financial commitment.
Mejuba does away with all of that, and after using it for over a week, I’m pretty impressed at how simple it is. I also like that I have greater control over privacy settings, so I can choose whom to share certain content with. While the overall design of the site could use a little work to spruce it up, it’s still a simple interface to use.
Since there is no storage limit, you can upload a library of photos at full resolution without a problem, and then choose how to share them. You can opt to add root folders and any subsequent sub-folders, maintaining the same folder structure from your PC or Mac. Photos can also be separated into albums where you can share whatever albums you want publicly so every user on Mejuba can find them, or just with those on your friends list. If, for whatever reason, you want to keep a batch of pics close to your chest, you can keep it private, so they’re only viewable to you.
Video works in much the same way, though there is a limit of 1GB per video upload. I had uploaded several episodes of different shows that could be viewed by relatives overseas. Videos shot on vacation are perfect for Mejuba because you can share them with friends and family, and provide information that includes Google Maps integration. An embed code is made available in case you want to post it somewhere else too. Visitors can leave comments on what you’ve posted, possibly leading to a conversation among friends and family that is private to outsiders.
At the moment, you can transfer your entire library from Flickr and Picasa, with Facebook, Photobucket and Windows Live to follow. Geo-tagged photos can be seen in Street View too.
There seems to be continuous development going on with Mejuba, so more features are likely in the works. But as is, the site is really good at what it’s supposed to do.
