Over the past two weeks, I've been bombarded by a great deal of new camera and lens news releases in preparation for the upcoming Photokina 2010 to be hosted in Cologne, Germany. Photokina actually starts on September 21, but the photo giants have been preparing with releases of some of the most anticipated SLRs and lenses of 2010.
Just to give you an idea of how releases have ramped up, there were barely any new cameras and lenses announced until July-August and in the past ten days there have been 10 new point and shoots, 6 new DSLR bodies and 13 new lenses announced...
-----
Canon, Nikon and Sony have taken the cake in terms of new DSLR bodies so far.
Sony leads the pack with the release of the A-560, A-580 as well as the newly designed SLT A55 and A33 bodies. The new SLT line (which stands for "Single Lens Translucent") is the newest technology they've showcased which have a translucent mirror that passes some light through to the AF sensor to offer fast phase-detection AF... even while shooting movies. Pretty innovative stuff to address focusing issues on HD video.
Nikon's released the successor to the entry level D3000, the D3100 which adds full 1080p video, live view, and higher ISO to the existing feature set of its predecessor.
Canon announced the 60D yesterday which is a successor to the 50D, but now with HD video from the 7D and the rear LCD from the T2i.
trishussey explains more on the 60D.
Each of the three giants have released four new lenses to support their growing line up of recently announced DSLR bodies and those who are looking for some more range or creative options with their existing setups.
And a quick mention to those looking for point and shoot options - everything from entry-levels (i.e. Samsung PL90) to full manual (i.e. Canon S95) and projection screen models (Nikon S1100pj) have also been announced.

With Photokina less than three weeks away, we can expect to see some new models from camera giants that have been a little quiet with respect to their line up. Pentax fans are expecting a new body in the works which should be released soon. It's an exciting time of the year for photographic equipment junkies (like myself) so keep posted to check out what hot new digs will hit the streets in the next few months.
