If it’s true that gamers are a unique group of people that share a passion for something that not everyone in the mainstream can fully understand, then a dating site to bring them together should make sense. This was the idea that brought the site Gamer Dating to life.
To be honest, I only caught wind of this site when doing research on unique Web 2.0 sites, as I have no real use for something like this, personally. But still, I can appreciate what it’s trying to do. After all, don’t like-minded couples meet at anime and Star Trek conventions, too? I wouldn’t know, as I’ve only really gone to sports card and comic book conventions in my younger days, but I have to assume that couples who have met at niche conventions can trace their courtships back to the pastime that brought them there in the first place.
Gamer Dating naturally sweeps away all the stereotypes that might inevitably come with the passion gamers have. Mind you, browsing through the list of profiles, a considerable majority are male, but plenty of girls are members, too. In fact, one of them has a blog where one of her recent topics is positing that more girls would join the site “if they were treated better”.
There is still room for growth, of course. Despite the presence of a forum, there’s nothing in it so far. I’m not sure there is the option to chat anywhere — or at least it may not be available unless you get an account.
For the moment, it seems Gamer Dating is still a free site because it’s in beta. That will likely change once the creators reach a point of no return. But then again, a site like this should probably be a paid one anyway. The last thing gamers would have patience for is having clowns with no real interest in meeting anyone logging on and causing trouble. Or maybe some gamers would welcome the challenge to pwn them.
