US-based market research firm NPD Group have released their monthly video game hardware and software sales data for June 2009. It was a pretty dismal month for gaming with aggregate hardware numbers dropping a painful 38% compared to last year, the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year declines. All consoles saw a boost in their sales numbers for June thanks in part to being a five-week tracking period versus May's four-week period. I've been having one of those weeks where there's been simply too much to do and I've been too excitable to do much of it, which means it doesn't really make much sense that this is the week that I decided to investigate the browser FPS, a relatively new form for gaming that intends to be a quick, pick-up-and-play timesink. When the original Guitar Hero released back in November of 2005 it was the start of a cultural phenomenon that still seems to be growing by leaps and bounds some three and a half plus years later. The latest entry in the franchise, Guitar Hero Smash Hits, is a spin-off compilation disc that is so jammed pack with features it almost feels like a full-fledged entry in the series. That said, there are a few quirks with this game that doesn't quite make it the best Guitar Hero game on the market. Read more...
