If you don't need to use the space, don't
I didn't know this until last night, but it turns out that Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) can open compressed files on the fly and return them to their compressed state when finished. Unfortunately I guess that mere mortal users can't get access to this feature unless you get a little help. And help is here, for free. Read more...

Open question: Should phone apps be open or closed?
Apple has raised the ire of developers with its tight control on iPhone apps. This week Apple was pulling explicit or adult oriented apps from the App Store, but the question is should a phone developer have that kind of control over apps on its phones? Read more...

Samsung is squeezing amazing displays into very small packages!
This week I was invited by National Public Relations to get a tour of the Samsung pavilion at Live City Yaletown to tale a look at Samsung's new mobile phones. While we in Vancouver can't turn around without seeing an ad for the Samsung Omnia II, what turned out to be more exciting was what Samsung is bringing out later this year. Read more...

Spaceward Ho! Sort of.
Back in the day on the PC, Mac, and even Amiga was a cool and sarcastic little exploraton and exploitation game called Spaceward Ho! Today, you can download a Mac and Palm OS version of the game from the developer's site, which is cool if you've got those platforms. But what if your portable gaming device is an iPhone? What?!? No Lightsabre App for Android! Oh Yes There Is.
Apple broke new ground with their iPhone app store. Suddenly the "there's an app for that..." wasn't just a slogan it became a selling point for people deciding if an iPhone was for them. BlackBerry has their app store (I tried it on my Curve and I'm not a fan), but I see Android-based phones as the real competitor to the iPhone. There is an Android app store, not locked down like Apple's is, but it seems that Android apps aren't getting as much attention as iPhone (or even BlackBerry) apps are. Read more...

3DTV - Back to TV as an Event
Back when TV was new, watching TV was a family event -- not the ubiquitous always-on attention sink it is now. Families made plans to gather before the small glowing box and be entertained in a new way. It seems that everything old is new again as 3DTV technology begins hitting the marketplace. Read more...

You can't have it both ways: journalist and source to yourself
And I thought bloggers lead complicated lives. So get this, IDG (they publish ComputerWorld) had a journalist by the name of Randall C. Kennedy who often wrote about Windows and cited benchmark and other data from "Devil's Mountain Software". Okay, not a problem. The spokesman for DMS was Craig Barth, CTO of the company. All good right? Yeah not so much. Turns out that Barth doesn't exist. Barth is Kennedy. This might be just "bad" if this was a recent thing, unfortunately Kennedy has been doing this for, oh a decade. Read more...
