A transcript of an interview I did with viral video pro Billy Reid to help you understand viral videos and how you can use YouTube to market yourself and make money. Read more...
True Blood is more than just a TV show; HBO has done something a little mind blowing–they actually get the connected media experience and they're leveraging every bit of it to make compelling television that goes beyond the hour you spend with it per episode. It's more work for them, but it's the reason you absolutely should own True Blood on Blu-ray and why you should give it the same extensive access to your free time that I have. It's worth your time. One thing that's not so obvious when you're looking at buying a 3DTV is that some of the background tech has been enhanced too, not just your TV screen. Read more...
3DTV is a new TV technology that's being embedded in today's flat-screen TV systems. But a 3D capable TV is only one piece of the tech puzzle you need to experience 3D. Read more...
3DTV has landed on shelves across the country. It's here, but how long will it take to sink in to the user base? If the HDTV adoption rate is an indication, it could take a long time. Read more...
Undying week lumbers forwards with a series that won't die and just keeps on giving. Some of the greatest moments in gaming have come from the Resident Evil series (Master of Unlocking indeed...) and the movies are among my favourite guilty pleasures (watching Milla Jovovich run down Toronto City Hall shortly before it got nuked makes me grin like a 12-year old boy). So it's no surprise that Resident Evil 5 (the first HD offering in the series) has a whole lot to offer. Gold takes it one step further with an incredibly complete RE5 experience. Read more...
Today, I had a pleasure of moderating an exciting panel discussion topic from Future Shop's Yonge-Dundas store: 3D televisions. The event was orchestrated to bring together the very best representatives in retail and entertainment to chat about this amazing technology, as well as celebrate the Canadian entry of 3D TVs to customers. It's fitting that both God of War III and Ninja Assassin were unleashed on Blu-ray on the same day. Both the game and the movie feature a plot centred on violent vengeance, gravity-defying, bone-crunching action, and more blood than the rivers of Egypt after a biblical plague. I wasn't sure what to expect from Ninja Assassin but it's clear to say that what I got was better than I could have imagined. Undying week continues with the story of Raizo and the Ozunu clan. Exciting news from the Nintendo camp emerged yesterday when a press release appeared on their Japanese website announcing a new portable hardware device the company plans to introduce during their current fiscal year (April 2010 - March 2011). Tentatively named the Nintendo 3DS, the handheld is said to play games "with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses." Read more...
If you're out looking for a new TV, you'll have seen brochures, ads and video hyping 3DTV. All the major manufacturers have developed, or are developing 3DTV screens, and there's no indication that they're going to be dropping 3D from their product lineup anytime soon. Read more...
Could this be the iPhone killer? Maybe. Google has upgraded the Nexus One to be available in Canada. I think I want one. Read more...
Undying week continues with the anti-hero that even the gods can't kill: Kratos returns in God of War III exclusively for the PlayStation 3. The Ghost of Sparta has never looked as good, and that's saying a lot, considering God of War II was quite possibly the most graphically intense game on the PS2. How does this epic finish to a legendary saga wrap up? Read more...
The commotion of the PMA exhibition floor, long hours in front the computer, and pleasant weather of Anaheim has long subsided. Back in Vancouver (with some sunshine) I have had a chance to look back at PMA show a month ago, and at the same time list some of the more interesting trends to look for in 2010. Read more...
Or "what I've found in my inbox and I think should be recounted to you, but I don't think it could stand up to a full post on it's own." This week! Square Enix announce a new Kingdom Hearts, Microsoft put TrueColour technology in their new webcams, and Crackdown 2 is dated. Read more...
Earlier today I read an excellent essay by Umair Haque titled The Social Media Bubble, hosted on the Harvard Business Review blog. Quite simply, the essay, (the first part of two, it seems) posits: "Despite all the excitement surrounding social media, the Internet isn't connecting us as much as we think it is. It's largely home to weak, artificial connections, what I call thin relationships." After that hypothesis, the author then goes on to touch on points of relationship, trust, disempowerment, hate, exclusion and value to support his position. Read more...
Twitter turned 4 this weekend, and while the buzz continues to grow about the service, has it peaked? Dig deeper into the twitter stats and you'll see there's a lot of people on the site - doing nothing. Read more...
This week I've got five days of reviews focusing on characters that just won't die. Up first is New Moon, the latest iteration in the Twilight series. Both Bella and Edward have harrowing near-death experiences, and let's face it, the undead are undying. Undying week begins! Read more...
For the last while I've been trying the Canon Rebel XTi and can say that it is an excellent starter DSLR. Hey I still prefer Nikons, but there isn't anything wrong with the XTi. Okay beyond the fact that neither the latest updates of Lightroom or iPhoto seem to like the RAW files it generated. Pity, because they were pretty good. Read more...
The approach that Sony is taking this console generation, similar to last, is the much-touted ten year lifecycle. It seems the company knows it has many aces up its sleeve and is willing to let some of its biggest franchises -- such as Gran Turismo, Twisted Metal, and Shadow of the Colossus -- remain sequel-less more than three years into the PS3 lifespan. It's now 2010, three years nearly to the day since its predecessor, and the PS3 exclusive God of War III has finally hit. Has the ambitious effort by Sony's Santa Monica Studio created the best of the series? Let the judging begin. Read more...
A couple of weeks ago I had the good fortune to be invited to take an exclusive look at a bunch of new Samsung tech that Future Shop will be rolling out over the next few weeks and months. Of course, the big buzz at the winter Consumer Electronics Show was 3D, so that's what I jumped on first. Read more...
What will the iPad really be like? By the end of next week Americans who pre-ordered iPads will have them in their hot little hands. We all gather that it will be a couple weeks later for us up here in Canada. Sony has preemptively—and temporarily—lowered prices on its eReaders, (competitor) has developed a Kindle app for the iPad and seems to be circling the wagons. Read more...
Cameron Bright (Alec of the Volturi) signed autographs for hours at the New Moon midnight Launch Event at the Broadway Future Shop Friday night. Fans got their favourite Twilight souvenirs signed, then got back in line to get their DVDs and Blu-rays signed as well. What a night! Read more...
It's Sunday night; I'm getting tired. The US just passed a historic health care bill, which, honestly, looking at the contents of it I can barely see what it does, but then, they're all chuffed about it, so lets be happy for them. I'll be off to bed soon, but my mind, rather than thinking about the few million more Americans that will now have (some form of) health care, is drawn to one of the games I played last week--Final Fight: Double Impact. Quite a diverse bit of news this week, as Twitter will soon be @Anywhere, Palm -- perhaps nowhere, and soon, iPad everywhere! Read more...
