AnnouncementsGuilty Pleasure: Mega 64's Topher Great PayensGDC was months ago and yet I still find myself, every once in a while, going to youtube to rewatch the video which Mega64 opened this year's Independent Games Festival with--Topher Great Payen's "The GDC." It's a completely silly parody of a song, "Shine on Me" by Chris Dane Owens, which in itself is a completely silly, poppy rock track with probably the most astonishingly over-the-top video I've ever seen. But for some reason it's a real "guilty pleasure"; something I return to for a quick laugh when I'm a bit bored.
See it here:
And compare it with Chris Dane Owens' original here:
I think that's probably the best way to see them (or at least, it's the order in which I saw them.) I can say that quite without irony that I love both of these videos, even if the GDC one is no longer "timely" (of course, I do hope you have played
World of Goo
; it really is a bit like god is kissing you.)
They're also a good reminder of how funny Mega64 can be. Though I'm not a massive fanboy for the comedy trio, they absolutely have their moments. Most of their skits aren't direct parodies like The GDC, instead being strange, video-game related "candid camera" jokes. I imagine they first came to many people's attention with the 2003 (!) video based on Shenmue , which is probably only funny if you know the game in question well. Which you should, because it's an important part of video game history! Here it is:
There are lots more greats, such as their twisted takes on
Tetris
,
Katamari Damacy
,
Resident Evil 4
and
Assassin's Creed
. Check them out and see if you can turn one of Mega64's videos into one of your own guilty pleasures!
