Ah pirates. The mere mention of the word conjures up images of gaudy carousers adorned in swashbuckler shirts, musketeer hats and a shapely cutlass. So seeing pirate minifigs swaying and gallivanting around a half-sized stage to the lyrical music of Pink is as amusing as it is bizarre. Despite this odd pairing, if the first trailer of LEGO Rock Band is anything to go by, this game looks to be incredibly fun and oozing with cuteness. Read more...

A little over two years ago I was fortunate enough to spend a week visiting Lake Manyara, the Serengeti Plain and Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. Truly an out-of-this-world photographic experience and on my top-2 of beautiful places in the world (on that list is also Ilulissat in Greenland). Back then I was huge into wildlife and nature photography and never (as in never-ever) did I image I would enjoy portrait photography. Now look at me, having sold my wildlife lens (my beloved Canon 100-400mm L), upgraded to a portrait-oriented full frame camera and even gone to the extent of spending my weekends shooting portraits. Ever notice that it seems like what kind of computer you use becomes some kind of personal statement? Oh you use a Mac ... Wow you use Ubuntu ... I use a PC because I like to do real work (I had been known to say that in the past), all of these statement make it seem that you must choose one over the other or that one is all that much better than the other. Frankly, I use all three on a regular basis and they all get the job done and they all drive me nuts sometimes. Now one "bonus" that came with Macs switched to Intel processors (the same as Windows machines), was that you could run Windows natively on a Mac. Finally. We can flip in Canada. The Flip video camera has been one of the hottest tech accessories since the iPhone but we in Canada have been about a year behind in the product line. Last summer, as the Flip Ultra made its debut in Canada, an upgraded model, the Flip Mino (pron: Minnow), was released in the US. This spring, when the line was updated again with HD added to the line, Canadians were still waiting for the Mino, let alone the HD products. But that inequity has been erased. It’s obvious that games companies have become incredibly enamoured with downloadable content, as it appears to allow them to turn a retail game – something that would normally net them one sale per gamer – into a continually generating revenue stream. It's been 15 long years since Super Punch-Out!! released on the SNES and after such a long haitus, Little Mac is finally back and ready to fight. Developed by Vancouver's own Next Level Games, Punch-Out!! is a reimagining of the classic NES original that started the franchise all the way back in 1987. What's so great about 50mm lenses? They are kinda puny with a small filter size (not like the 77mm filter size on some other lenses I have shot with), they are mostly made of what feels like cheap plastic, and you can get one for under $150. That can't be a good lens, right? Wrong. It is a fantastic lens and a blessing in disguise for us shooting with a non-full frame DSLR. Read more...

When Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, gave a commencement at The University of Pennsylvania last week, the advice he gave must have sounded odd coming from the head of one of the most influential companies on he web. What he told the students seemed to go against what his company believes in. He asked them to simply unplug and live an analog life. Schmidt went on to urge the grads to "turn off your computers," and "discover all that is human around us." Growing up in the 70s and 80s we were told by our parents to "turn off the idiot box." Now, it seems, youth are being asked to "turn off the information box." Read more...
