Even though I still don't have an iPad (yet), I will stand by the fact that the iPad will change the publishing market and I think black-and-white/grayscale displays on other ebook readers will have to change or be also-rans in the reader market. How have I come to this conclusion? My very own book, Create Your Own Blog. Read more...
Today a story broke about a location-sharing startup (like Foursquare) that had a little data leak—Techmeme: Blippy cofounder responds to credit card leak: “It's a lot less bad than it looks” (Paul Boutin/VentureBeat). No, I'm not trivializing credit card numbers being released online, and actually that's not what this post is even about. This post is about caching. Read more...
Darwinia+ is one of the prettiest games on the Xbox 360. Okay, I'm sure many people could argue with that, but its clean, simple polygons that glow like lines on a vector monitor are some of the most beguiling graphics I've seen in a game, entirely otherworldly while still being recognizably that of a video game. I started my weekend off right by ensuring I've uploaded all my videos and sifted through the ones I thought were most interesting and would be fun to share here in digital camcorders and cameras. Which ones interest you? Read more...

Why do I use a clothesline? You may think it's because I’m a humourless electro-pauper, scratching my constant itch to sacrifice my time and energy on behalf of the environment. But there's more benefits than you realize. Read more...
If you’ve ever been through the harrowing ordeal of losing a laptop or having it stolen unsuspectingly, you would probably feel relieved that you have at least one recourse in getting it back. Read more...
If you live in Alberta or Ottawa, I hope you’ve had the chance to retire your old electronics at your local Future Shop. As you know from my first-ever post that was made earlier this month on the Tech Blog I highlighted some of the great green campaigns Future Shop has launched recently, including the new Electronics Take Back program. The Acer T230H touchscreen monitor just got a little better! If you’ve been looking for more cool things to do with your Acer Touchscreen (or any other Windows 7 PC with a multi-touch display) you’ll be happy to hear that Microsoft has released the Touch Pack to the general public. Read more...
There is no doubt 3D is the tech buzz word of 2010. 3D movies are in theaters, 3DTVs are making their way into our homes, and even digital photography is going into the third dimension. Yes, you read right. You can now shoot 3D pictures on a digital camera. Not just any camera mind you, right now it's only possible with Fujifilm's FinePix Real 3D V1. While photographers have been playing with 3D pictures for years, Fujifilm is taking the first stab at a digital camera which can automatically shoot pictures in 3D on the fly. I've had the chance to spend a couple of weeks with the digital camera, and I have to say the experience has been an interesting one. Read more...
The Lord of the Rings trilogy landed at the box office with a huge impact. The idea of bringing Tolkien's master work to screen had been a dream of filmmakers and studios for over half a century; an animated effort was aborted shortly after The Hobbit was finished. The trilogy itself was said to be unfilmable. Read more...
Last week Glee returned to TV screens and PVRs around the globe. And since the series captured my attention when it launched last year, I planned to watch the much-heralded return later in the evening in HD courtesy of my Telus TV package. Read more...
Admission time: since I started writing on the Future Shop Tech Blog about a year ago, I have only written articles about video games. That is, until today. So why am I deviating from my core focus? Well, over the weekend I had the opportunity to check out the Ontario Science Centre's latest attraction: Harry Potter: The Exhibition, and since the widely popular franchise has so many connections to not only video games, but the entertainment industry as a whole, I figure plenty of Tech Blog regulars would love to get the inside scoop on what this ambitious new exhibition has to offer. So a few weeks ago Capcom invited media from around the world to Hawaii to see in complete secrecy the company's line-up of games for the coming year. at their "Captivate 2010" event Unfortunately, I didn't get to go--I've never been to Hawaii, either!--but I can't be too annoyed, as they've announced the line-up publicly today and it's a good one, including, most amazingly, Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. For all of you gamers out there that have a PS3, you probably already know that the console can do more than just play games and Blu-ray flicks. File under major oops. An Apple employee (remarkably it seems he's still employed by Apple) loses a prototype of the next iPhone in a bar (sounds like a bad joke doesn't it). Now we have a pretty good idea of what is coming next for iPhones—This Is Apple's Next iPhone - Iphone 4 - Gizmodo—conventional wisdom is that we'll see it announced in June at WWDC, so... So where does the 650 fit in that lineup? Read more...
