If you haven't yet played 2D Boy's astonishing, Independent Games Festival award-winning game World of Goo , now is a good time to pick it up, as it's available from the developer directly for a donation, to celebrate the game being one year old.

I know in this industry that's always reaching for the next big thing that a game being a year old makes it seem like yesterday's news, but I really can't recommend World of Goo highly enough. To descibe it roughly, it's a clever puzzle game in which you connect and create towers of goo - from individual goo balls - to reach goals. Thanks to some great physics and goo dynamics, the game is incredibly satisfying to play, but even better the game has style to spare, with a haunting musical soundtrack - that you can actually download on its own, for free, here - and incredibly evocative graphics. Watchthe embedded video above if you're not quite getting it.

The best thing of all is that before the end of the week (that's October 8th) you can download the game directly from the developer's website after paying "whatever you think it's worth". The game is normally $20, but this means you could pick it up for 1 cent if you so wished. I'm intrigued to see how many people do, in fact, pay only a penny for the game (I think it's part of the reason 2D Boy created the sale) particularly as after paying for a while you'll realize it's worth far more.

My suggestion is that if you're interested in picking it up, play the demo first and then donate based on how much you think you're going to enjoy continuing to play the game. However, I strongly suggest you pick the game up before the end of the week - I guarantee you'll consider it worth whatever you've paid for it.
